One day during the summer of 1999, workers for the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) opened up the 103-year-old Breakwater Lighthouse off the coast of Lewes, Delaware. Much to their surprise, the lighthouse was occupied by a blue, furry pirate and his parrot. The red-haired pirate didn't remember his name or how he got there. (The parrot must have amnesia, too, for he has yet to say a word.) The DRBA decided to "adopt" the pirate, giving him a job on the ferry. A contest to name the pirate brought in 15,000 entries. The winning name, a combination of two entries, was Lighthouse Pete the Pirate. Now Pete happily sails on selected ferry trips, greeting passengers and entertaining children and adults alike. Come meet him for yourself!
